Over 70 households at Amakye Bare near Adankwame in the Atwima Nwabiagya North Municipality of the Ashanti region have been affected by a devastating rainstorm
Speaking in an interview with the media, the NADMO Director of Atwima Nwabiagya North Municipal Assembly, Hon. James Kwabena Nketiah, revealed that the heavy downpour not only damaged homes but also caused extensive destruction to schools in the area.
He further disclosed that three buildings collapsed during the storm, leaving three individuals in critical condition and currently receiving medical treatment.
“The heavy rainstorm ripped off roofs of almost all the schools in the community. Amakye Bare D/A JHS was among the affected schools, with its roof completely destroyed, leaving about 198 learners without a proper learning environment. One school also collapsed entirely,” he stated.
According to him, several churches in the community sustained damage, while nearly 70% of residential homes were heavily affected, leaving many families displaced.
Addressing the immediate relief efforts, Hon. James Kwabena Nketiah assured that the Atwima Nwabiagya North Municipal Assembly and Hon. Frank Yeboah, MP for Atwima Nwabiagya North Constituency, are working together to provide assistance to affected residents.
“We have visited all those affected by the rainstorm. Some victims have taken refuge in churches, while we have also appealed to residents to help accommodate others who were displaced,” he explained.
He further stated that a meeting would be held with the District Assembly to devise the best strategies for supporting affected individuals.
“As a matter of urgency, the Assembly will provide mattresses and roofing sheets to those in need. Following this, we will submit a report to the central government, seeking additional support to aid in the recovery process,” he added.
The disaster has left the community in distress, with urgent calls for intervention to restore normalcy and rebuild the affected homes, schools, and churches.
