The Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper and Nkrumaist, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, has strongly opposed an attempt by some political actors especially the New Patriotic Party (NPP) members to describe Joseph Kwame Kyeretwie Boakye Danquah, popularly known as J.B. Danquah as a national hero and that he should be celebrated like the first President of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
Some claimed that J.B Danquah contributed a lot towards National Development but Kwesi Pratt is saying otherwise.
According to him, J.B Danquah was just the Eastern Regional Chairman of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) and did not make any impact in nation building.
In his recent interview, Kwesi Pratt stated that J.B Danquah is equivalent to the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in modern-day politics.
“J.B Danquah as a national hero? Do you know Danquah’s true position in the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC)? Danquah was the Eastern Regional Chairman of the UGCC, that’s all. That was the highest position he got, which was Eastern Regional Chairman of the UGCC. So if you are looking for his equivalent in modern-day politics, it is Wontumi. I am serious, the level that Danquah attained in the UGCC has been attained by Wontumi in the NPP. He was a regional chairman—is Wontumi not a regional chairman?…….So are you saying Wontumi is bigger than Danquah? I didn’t say that.” Kwesi Pratt stated.
According to him, J.B Danquah lost all the elections he contested, even in his hometown, Kyebi. And so J.B Danquah can not be imposed on Ghanaians.
“But J.B. Danquah was simply Regional Chairman of the UGCC. Even put that one aside, which election did J.B. Danquah ever wins? All his attempts in contesting elections, he lost. Even in his hometown, Kyebi, they voted against J.B. Danquah, he couldn’t even win the Kyebi election. If J.B Danquah could not even be the founder of Kyebi, his hometown, how can he become the founder of Ghana? He lost elections in Kyebi not once; he was defeated by a pupil teacher. So, you go and bring Wontumi’s equivalent and you want to impose him on us?”
