The Member of Parliament (MP) for Garu, Hon. Thomas Winsum Anabah, has called for a permanent ban on politically exposed persons from acquiring state assets.
According to him individuals who enter politics should not have the privilege of purchasing government-owned properties, even after leaving office. He argued that the restrictions on politically exposed persons should not be limited to their time in office but should extend throughout their lifetime.
“One other thing I would like to say about this proposal is that a politically exposed person should remain politically exposed until death. It shouldn’t just be for four years.
“Tell me, those who worked under former President Kufuor, are they not still politically exposed? How many years has it been since they left office? They remain politically exposed,” he pointed out.
According to Hon. Anabah, aspiring politicians should understand from the outset that they would not have the power to acquire state property at any point in their lives. He stressed that this would ensure that public office is seen as a service to the nation rather than an opportunity for personal enrichment.
“Once you know you want to go into politics, you must also know that you will never have the power in this country to buy any state property—whether land, vehicles, houses, or anything else. You should recognize that going into politics is a sacrifice,” he stated.
He continued, “To me, politics is about service. You come to serve, clean your hands, and leave, knowing that you worked voluntarily for your country.”
