Former Deputy Executive Director of the National Service Authority (NSS), Gifty Oware-Mensah, has been released from the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) custody.
According to reports, she was released on Saturday, March 8.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council Member was detained on Friday, 7th March, 2025 in connection with the ghost names scandal that rocked the National Service Authority (NSS).
Gifty Oware was detained and questioned about the ongoing ghost names on NSS payroll.
Reports suggest that the former NSS Deputy Executive Director will face another questioning by the NIB to ascertain the irregularities within the National Service Scheme.
It was revealed that 81,885 suspected ghost names were discovered on the National Service Authority (NSS) payroll.
Statement issued at the Office of the president revealed that the previous government presented 180,030 names for allowance payment in 2024 but after a thorough scrutiny, 98,145 people were guineily verified as National Service Personnel.
President John Dramani Mahama upon receiving the figures directed the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) to probe the ghost names scandal.
“The Ministry of Finance has upon the completion of the head count, released an amount of GHS 226,019,224 covering allowance payment arrears for 98,145 actual National Service Personnel. This figure is 81,885 less than the 180,030 names presented by the previous management of the NSA for allowance payment in 2024.” The statement read.
“President Mahama has tasked the new management of the NSA to implement urgent reforms to establish adequate controls to prevent the recurrence of the phenomenon of ghost names” It added.
Gifty Oware was detained two days after she arrived in Ghana.
Before her arrival, reports circulated on social media that she was running away to avoid the ongoing investigations.
