I’m not impressed in the number of women in Mahama’s ministerial appointment – Speaker

Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon. Alban Sumana Bagbin has lamented less appointment of women in state institutions under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama.

According to him, he is not impressed with the leadership positions of women in the leadership of Parliament, Committees of Parliament, and appointment of Ministerial positions.

Speaking at an International Women’s Day event in Parliament on Monday, March 10, 2025, Alban Bagbin called on the government and other stakeholders to ensure that the gender equity target in making appointments in state institutions.

“I am using this platform to call the attention of the government and all stakeholders to pay close attention to the Act, particularly, Section 14 which provides that the President shall ensure the progressive achievement in the gender equity target in making appointment in the following: Ministerial position, Council of State, The Independent Constitutional Bodies, Governing bodies of State Institutions, The Public Service, District Assemblies and any other office which the President makes an appointment.” He said.

According to him, the passing of a bill that allows 30% of women appointed to state institutions has been delayed and therefore, urged the leadership not to apply the same wishy-washy attitude towards its implementation.

“The base-line target set for the 2024 to 2026 is 30% of women appointed to these institutions under Section 14. We will not anything below the statutory benchmark percentage. We have delayed long enough in passing the bill. Let us not apply the same wishy-washy attitude towards its implementation. I am not impressed with what I have seen so far regarding the leadership positions of women in the leadership of the following, Parliament, Committees of Parliament, and appointment of Ministerial positions, I am not impressed at all. Even the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection is not a cabinet ministry,” Speaker of Parliament added.

The minority in Parliament earlier raised concerns over President John Dramani Mahama’s appointment of a few women in his government.
