Finance Minister responds to Minority Leader’s criticism, acknowledges his challenges

The Finance Minister and Member of Parliament for Ajumako Enyan Esiam, Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, has acknowledged the challenges faced by the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, and expressed empathy for his current predicament.

The Finance Minister made these remarks in response to comments by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who described the 2025 Economic Budget presented by Dr. Forson as an “Azaa budget,” meaning a deceptive budget.

According to him, Ghanaian youth had high expectations for the 24-hour economy policy, hoping it would create jobs and drive economic transformation. However, he noted that the Finance Minister failed to outline any concrete plans for its implementation.

Speaking on The Point of View on Channel One TV on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, which was closely monitored by Elvisanokyenews.net, the Finance Minister disclosed that he understands the frustrations of Mr. Afenyo-Markin, given his experience in the same position.

He further explained that he shares a cordial relationship with the Minority Leader and is not perturbed by Afenyo-Markin’s remarks, as he understands the demands and pressures of the position.

“I’ve been a Minority Leader before, and I can understand his work, so let’s leave him to do his work. He is my former friend and now he is my brother. Let’s say he is doing his work, and I respect that,” Dr. Forson stated.

The Finance Minister acknowledged the mounting expectations on Afenyo-Markin, particularly in the wake of his party’s recent election defeat and its reduced presence in Parliament. The New Patriotic Party (NPP), which previously held 138 seats, now has only 87, making the role of Minority Leader even more crucial.

“I recognize the pressure he is going through. His party has just lost elections, and their number in Parliament has reduced significantly. I can understand his frustration. He has to do his job, and the expectation is so high on him. Currently, as we speak, he is the main voice for his party, and so he is to do his job, and I appreciate that.” He said.
