Outspoken Media Personality, Okatakyie Mensah-Afrifa was arrested by the National Investigative Bureau (NIB) on Wednesday, 19th March, 2025.
The host of “For The Record” show was later released by the NIB.
His arrest has sparked many reactions on social media especially the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Some NPP gurus including the minority Leader, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin and the General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong have reacted to the arrest describing it as intimidation against freedom of speech by the NDC government.
According to Afenyo-Markin, the NDC government using State Security to intimidate opponents is not good for our democracy.
“It started with Abronye. Now it’s Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah. The NDC Government must be tolerant! Using State Security to intimidate opponents is not good for our democracy! Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah must be released now!!!” He wrote.
Justice Kodua also wrote “The arrest of Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah, a journalist, by the NDC government is a dangerous attack on democracy and freedom of speech! Ghana must descend on tyranny. He must be released now.”
NPP activist, Abdul Rauf Ibrahim also said “For years, we endured Kevin Taylor and Captain Smart. They spread numerous lies about innocent NPP members and incited violence against us. Yet, here we are—less than three months into this administration and they are already sending National Security after journalists who dare to criticize them with facts and data. The NDC and John Mahama must take immediate action to release Okatakyie Afrifa, or they will face the full force of our collective outrage.
Another X user who goes by name Nana Kwame added “Instead of focusing on solving the persistent power outages (Dumsor) and water shortages affecting many homes, they are prioritizing political witch-hunts. From Ken Ofori-Atta to Abronye, Gifty and now Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah. Ghanaians deserve leadership that prioritizes their basic needs over intimidation tactics. If they put half as much effort into governance as they do into harassment, the country would be in a far better place.”
