Traders must be educated on fire safety – Mahama speaks on Adum fire incident

President John Dramani Mahama has said traders and shop owners must be educated and committed to fire safety to prevent future tragedies.

Reacting to the recent fire incident in Adum market in Kumasi, Mr. Mahama said the use of gas cylinders and cooking in markets are very dangerous .

“This tragedy underscores the urgent need for improved fire safety. I’ve directed the Chief of Staff to work with the Ashanti Regional Minister and NADMO to assess losses and provide immediate relief. A major concern is the use of gas cylinders and cooking in markets. These practices are extremely dangerous. Our traders and shop owners must be educated and committed to fire safety to prevent future tragedies.” Mahama posted on X.

According to him, he is deeply saddened by the destruction.

“I am deeply saddened by the destruction at Adum market in Kumasi after Friday’s fire. My heart goes out to the affected traders. I visited the market and commended the Fire Service for their efforts, but access remains a major challenge. We must prioritise better planning in our markets.” He added.

Mr. Mahama earlier, raised concerns about lack of proper planning in the market places which make it difficult to enter when there is an incident like this.

“Looking at the stores that have been burnt and traders who have lost their money and other items, it is very pathetic. First of all, I will thank the Ghana Fire Service for their early interventions to quench the fire. What the fire Officers have told me is the difficulty of entering the market place. Most of our marketplaces are like that where you can’t get access to enter the place so when incidents like this happen it makes their work difficult.” He told journalists when he visited the scene.

“So it is important to plan our markets well. The Regional Minister and NADMO will work together to support the traders who have lost their money.” The president added.
