A political scientist, Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante, has expressed deep concern over the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) decision to summon former Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya Constituency, Sarah Adwoa Safo before its disciplinary committee.
On March 20, 2025, the NPP released a statement signed by its General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, referring Adwoa Safo to the party’s Disciplinary Committee. The statement indicated that her recent media engagements violated the party’s directives.
The decision comes after her comments on several media platforms which the party leadership viewed as a direct contravention of an earlier directive prohibiting members from discussing matters that could create disaffection and unrest within the party.
Reacting to the development on Joy News’ which was monitored by Elvisanokyenews.net, Dr. Asah-Asante questioned the fairness of the party’s internal disciplinary measures, pointing out that several prominent members had spoken about the NPP’s electoral losses without facing similar repercussions.
“That is why I myself find it very, very unfortunate. We have seen a lot of giants who have spoken about their defeat. I can mention the party’s General Secretary, Mr. JFK, Mr. Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, Musa Superior, the former Subin MP, and a host of others. Why were they not called to the disciplinary committee, yet Adwoa Safo is? That, I don’t get,” he stated.
According to him, the NPP must create an atmosphere that allows members of the party to express their grievances openly as that is a fundamental principle of any political party. He explained that suppressing opinions within the party could stifle healthy internal debate and hinder efforts to rebuild after electoral setbacks.
“One thing the party misses is that, as a democratic institution, they should be able to allow people to vent their grievances so that, at the end of the day, they can pick up the pieces and rebuild the party. That’s the spirit behind any democratic enterprise—you must be prepared to have a big heart to accommodate all shades of opinion. Then, at the end of the day, you take a decision,” he added.
