Traders whose shops were destroyed recently by a devastating fire at Adum in Kumasi hace strongly rejected Interior Minister and Member of Parliament for Asawase, Muntaka Mubarak donation to the victims.
Muntaka donated 1,500 bags of rice, 800 boxes of cooking oil, and soap to the fire victims to support them in this hard time but the traders rejected the items.
In a video shared on social media, some of the fire victims were chanting “we don’t need rice” to express their dissatisfaction with the items.
The angry traders explained that their immediate need is not rice and cooking oil nor soap but rather, they need financial support to rebuild the market raided by the fire.
Millions of Ghana cedis were destroyed when fire gutted shops at Adum Blue light on Friday, March 24, 2025.
This has sparked a lot of reactions on social media.
Some netizens believe the traders’ protest is genuinely concerning because they need to hear measures put in place whether they Will be relocated or not. Not just donations of rice and cooking oil.
One X user said “It’s disheartening to see so many struggling during this time. Instead of just sending rice and oil to fire victims, let’s support orphanages that urgently need these resources for essential measures. And put measures that will help the affected people get relief.”
“People’s shops are burnt business destroyed ..and you go and give them rice…like rice..ei”
Some also believe the traders are ungrateful and that the items should be given to orphanage homes in Kumasi.
“Why waste resources on ungrateful people whilst we have a lot of orphanages in Kumasi that are in dire need of these items?”
Earlier, the affected traders indicated their willingness to rebuild the market themselves.
Meanwhile, former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has donated GH¢200,000 and 1,000 bags of cement to support the rebuilding of the market.
