The Member of Parliament for Asawase and Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mubarak, has proposed a levy of 10 pesewas per liter of fuel to support the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
According to him, this initiative is necessary to provide a sustainable funding source for fire emergency response in the country.
“All of us need to also make a contribution, and the way to make the contribution, in my view, I’m doing a paper to cabinet that look, the fuel that we buy, let’s dedicate just 10 pesewas per liter just for fire.
The Interior Minister revealed that Ghana has not procured a single new fire tender in the last decade, making it difficult for firefighters to respond effectively to fire emergencies as they are working with obsolete equipment.
“As we speak, when I went to the Ministry of Interior, I realized that the newest tender that we have was procured in 2014. That’s more than 10 years. You and I know the way they run. In about six, seven years, they become oscillate. Yet the newest tender we have is more than 10 years old. Why? The whole 10 years as a country, we have not bought even a single fire tender.” He lamented
The Asawase Member of Parliament called on Ghanaians to refrain from attacking firefighters while they are on duty. He stressed that firefighters are often blamed for inefficiencies, despite working with outdated equipment.
To address this issue, he suggested that even a smaller contribution of five pesewas per liter of fuel could create a dedicated fund for fire-fighting efforts.
“Sometimes we all blame the fire officers for nothing because they are using obsolete equipment so sometimes they go through so much frustration themselves so one other thing that with I think if we can do even five pesewas on a liter what it means is that we’ll have a dedicated fund to support fire-fighting efforts..” He said
