Ramadan is more than just abstaining from food and drink – Mahama tells Muslims

President John Dramani Mahama has admonished Muslims to uphold the values of Ramadan.

According to him, Ramadan is a time for deep spiritual reflection, self discipline, kindness towards others, love for humanity and others and so Muslims should reflect these values as they go out.

Speaking at the Eid-ul-Fitr celebration organised by the National Chief Imam at the Black Star Square in Accra, Mr. Mahama admonished Muslims to make peace with everyone.

He said if any Muslim has a quarrel with somebody, he should go to the person’s house and make peace with them after Sallah because Ramadan is more than just abstaining from food and drink.

“Ramadan is more than just abstaining from food and drink, it is a time for deep spiritual reflection, it is a time for self discipline and it is a time for kindness towards others. This period reminds us to clean our heart of bitterness while embracing the principles of patience, love and humility.” President Mahama said.

“And so if you have a quarrel with somebody this month of Ramadan after Sallah go to the person’s house and make peace with them.” He added.

President Mahama also called on Muslims to use the same Ramadan values to support nation building.

“The spirit of compassion, discipline and compassion you have demonstrated during the holy month of Ramadan, embodies the values we all strive for in building a prosperous and just country. Today is a day of joy, thanksgiving and renewal of faith. It also reminds us of the values that defined us as a people. Faith, sacrifices, unity and compassion are what we need.” He said.
