Following Ghanaian musician Thomas Adjei Wireko, professionally known as King Paluta’s petition to the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) Board and other complaints from the entertainment fans over the omission of King Paluta’s hit song ‘Makoma’ from this year’s ‘Popular Song of the Year’ nominations list, the Organisers of TGMA has clarified the issue.
According to them, the reason behind the “Makoma” song snub from the category was to implement their rules that restricts artistes from having more than one song in the same category.
TGMA Organisers said their rules say that each artiste can have only one song nomination per category, with the exception of Best Collaboration, Best International Collaboration, and Best Music Video categories, which recognize the contributions of collaborators and video editors.
“The Board has observed some confusion regarding categories rules and would like to provide clarification. Our rules stipulate that each artiste can have only one song nomination per category, with the exception of Best Collaboration, Best International Collaboration, and Best Music Video categories, which recognize the contributions of collaborators and video editors.” The Organisers of TGMA said in a statement.
They added that their research indicated that King Paluta’s ‘Aseda’ song won the more popular choice in both Highlife and Most Popular Song of the Year as compared to Makoma.
“This rule ensures that artistes do not split their votes (from the public, academy and board) and instead, have the best possible chance of winning. Using King Pulata’s ‘Aseda’ and ‘Makoma’ as an example, we applied these rules to select the most popular song. Based on our research including streaming numbers and airplay from 175 radio stations, ‘Aseda’ was adjudged the more popular choice in both Highlife and Most Popular Song of the Year.” The statement clarified
“Although the Board relaxed this rule in some notable years of the scheme, its current stance is to allow only one nomination per artiste per category.” They added.
