Ghanaian musician, Criss Wadlle has reacted to the abolishment some taxes including Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy), Betting Tax, and Emissions Tax by President John Dramani Mahama’s led National Democratic Congress (NDC).
On Wednesday April 2, 2025, President John Mahama signed a bill to officially scrap E-levy, Betting Tax, and Emissions Levy as promised during his campaign prior to the 2024 elections.
Before the President’s signature, some Economists and other experts indicated that abolishing these taxes could negatively affect the economy so the president should take a look at it again.
Reacting to the abolishment of the taxes, Criss Waddle stated that those who were opposing the abolishing of the taxes should continue to pay.
According to him, the NDC government has taken a bold decision to reduce the burden of Ghanaian people.
He said the move by the president indicated that the government should listen to the cry of his people.
“At this point those that constantly claimed they didn’t want the E-levy to be scrapped can contact the MTN office to continue paying for it out of Love. This GV has done his part by listening to the Cry of the majority of Ghanaians” He posted on X.
Majority of Ghanaians opposed the introduction of E-levy, Betting tax, Emissions tax introduced by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.
According to a report, the problematic taxes contributed to the defeat of the NPP in the 2024 election.
Other bills assented to by the president are the Value Added Tax (VAT) Amendment Bill, Income Tax Amendment Bill 2025, Petroleum Revenue Management Amendment Bill, 2025, Public Financial Management Amendment Bill, Earmarked Funds Capping and Realignment Bill, Energy Sector Levy Act, the Gold Board Bill 2025
And the Growth and Sustainability Levy Act.
