Private Legal Practitioner, Maurice Ampaw has admitted that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) adopted a strategy to ensure that President John Dramani Mahama would not be the presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2024 elections.
According to Lawyer Ampaw, President Mahama was the NPP’s nightmare so they did everything possible to ensure that he would not lead the NDC but failed.
Speaking on Wontumi TV, the lawyer who is affiliated to the NPP stated that the party was afraid of President Mahama because of his experience and communication skills.
“Ahead of the 2024 election, some of us suggested a different presidential candidate for the NDC, Some of us were afraid of president Mahama. Mahama’s coming was a big issue so what some of us were suggesting was that Kwabena Duffour and others were good candidates for the NDC. We preached to Ghanaians that Mahama is not a key candidate to make him unpopular.” Maurice Ampaw stated.
“We were afraid of Mahama at that time because he was coming with experience, he has been in opposition for long and again president Mahama is very good in communication, he knows how to convince people so we were doing everything to ensure Mahama won’t come.” He added.
The outspoken Lawyer believes it would be easier for the NPP to win the 2024 election if the NDC brought candidates like the current Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu or Dr. Kwabena Duffour.
“We adopted that strategy in order to defeat the NDC but it didn’t work. Do you think I will suggest a strong candidate for my opponent? No, so NPP were praying that President Mahama will not get the NDC flagbearer race, if they (NDC) brought someone like Haruna Iddrisu, Kwabena Duffour, it would be easy for us.” He said.
