#FixTheCountry movement is set to hit the streets to protest against the government for the ongoing illegal mining popularly known as galamsey.
Convener for #FixTheCountry movement Oliver Barker-Vormawor who made this announcement in an interview with Joy News said they are not pleased with the way the government is handling the galamsey issue in the country.
According to him, the illegal mining activities are causing more harm to the state and its citizens so they will protest on May 1at to remind the government about the pandemic.
He said the government’s lackadaisical attitude towards illegal mining in Ghana can not be continued.
“A protest is a way to express your concerns to the government, if the citizens don’t see how to mount pressure on the government. If the government doesn’t see the need to tackle serious issues urgently, we will definitely come to this point. Listen, it has been four months, if the government takes the galamsey issue seriously, a clearer road map would have been outlined to solve it.” He said.
He explained that the protest is not meant to accused the government of causing the the problem but rather they want the government to treat the galamsey issue as an urgent
“And so for us, the reason we are hitting the streets is to remind the government about the galamsey issue. Not necessary to say that the government has caused this problem. We are making the government aware that this is a serious and important issue and for that matter we are mobilising to the street. If it requires demonstration for the government to see that we are serious about this issue we will do it.” Oliver Barker-Vormawor added.
He called on Ghanaians to join the protest to save the water bodies and the forest reserves.
“We are marching in solidarity for the government to take serious action on this issue. We are thinking about organising this protest on 1st May which is May Day…..And we hope that Ghanaians should see this beyond politics and daily discussions. Let’s show up to draw the government’s attention to the problem we are facing.”
