The Chairperson of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Youth and Sports and Member of Parliament for Ashaiman, Hon. Norgbey Henry Ernest, has appealed for calm among Ghanaians calling for transparency regarding the budget of the senior national football team, the Black Stars.
Hon. Ernest Norgbey in an interview with the media assured citizens that the The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon Kofi Adam, is preparing to address the matter comprehensively and will soon brief the media.
“The Minister is preparing to brief the media. He will do so pretty soon about what has transpired so far, but you see, sometimes he wants to give the Ghana Football Association (GFA) the space to do their work.” He said.
The Ashaiman Member of Parliament explained that the Sports Ministry oversees a broad range of responsibilities, with the Black Stars and their activities representing just a fraction of his portfolio, a factor that sometimes contributes to delays in briefing the public about the budget of the Senior National Men Team.
“You know, he is a Minister for all the sectors, and the Black Stars or this game is just a percentage of his responsibilities,” he explained. “He will soon speak on where he started, what has been done so far, and what lies ahead.”
Hon. Norgbey Henry Ernest, also revealed that the budgetary allocation to the Sports Ministry remains inadequate, especially in light of the national economic situation.
“We all agree that the budgetary allocation for the Ministry is not enough to cover all the programs, but since we are trying to manage the situation and manage the economy, I think we have to manage with what we have now.” He said.
