Former Sports Minister calls for forensic audit into Accra sports stadium renovation

Former Sports Minister, Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye has issued a strong call for a forensic audit and full-scale investigation into the recent renovations carried out at the Accra Sports Stadium, describing the project as a “sham” and a “waste of money.”

Nii Lante Vanderpuye in an interview with Citi Sports expressed deep concern over what he believes to be poor management and questionable spending related to the stadium’s refurbishment.

The Accra Sports Stadium, which has been undergoing a facelift since the Confederation of African Football (CAF) banned the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in October 2024, was revamped in an effort to host Black Stars matches.

Workers were seen carrying out renovations ahead of the Black Stars’ 2026 World Cup qualifier against Chad in March 2025.

However, the former Sports Minister stated that the current state of the facility does not reflect the substantial sums reportedly spent on its renovation.

“We did an analysis of so-called renovations that have been done at the Accra Sports stadium. It’s a sham, It’s a waste of money, and I’ve asked the minister, I’ve asked him to cause a forensic audit and investigation of the renovation of the Accra Sports Stadium.” He said.

According to him, the quality of work done does not reflect the substantial funds reportedly spent. He questioned the legitimacy of the renovation efforts and called for accountability. He also used the opportunity to propose exploring the option of appointing a new management body to take charge of the facility.

“Because you can’t call this renovation an amount of money that has been sunk into rate. those things must be checked, and after that, then we can come to a conclusion. Look, do we still want to have the stadium managed the way it’s been managed in the past? Or we want to look at how we can get facility managers, qualified, experienced, professional facility managers to manage this facility.
