NDC Communicator slams Kumasi Mayor over “Arrogant” threat to traders, demands retraction and apology

A member of the Ahafo Regional Communications Team of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Edem Kwaku Edem, has taken a swipe at the Kumasi Mayor, Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, over what he describes as an “undemocratic and reckless” threat made against traders operating on pavements in the city’s central business district.

The Mayor, during a press conference on Sunday, April 14, threatened to unleash his men on hawkers and traders selling on pavements, a statement that has sparked outrage among some members of the public and political observers.

Speaking on Genesis Radio on Wednesday, April 16, Mr. Edem did not hold back in his criticism of the Mayor’s posture. According to him, while the issue of congestion and street trading in Kumasi is a real challenge, the approach adopted by the Mayor was completely wrong.

“It’s a difficult task dealing with the people of Kumasi, which I must admit. But for the approach [flogging], you see the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly. Likewise, all other metropolitan municipalities and assemblies have byelaws. We have our byelaws that are fixated, and they deal with all offenses and infractions,” he stated.

Mr. Edem described the Mayor’s comments as arrogant and unacceptable, warning that such utterances could cause disaffection for the NDC, especially among the grassroots who fought hard to secure victory in the 2024 general elections.

“The comment by the mayor is reckless and uncalled for. He must retract and apologise because the NDC really suffered to win the 2024 general elections, and the grassroots will not allow anyone to misuse the opportunity given to the National Democratic Congress by Ghanaians,” he said.

He further appealed to the President to take note of appointees who show signs of autocratic behavior and urged him not to tolerate any official who disrespects the people or uses power as a tool for intimidation.

Mr. Edem ended with a strong caution. He said, “We cannot allow anyone to derail the goodwill the people have shown us. Leadership must be by example not by threats.”
