Deputy Communication Director of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Malik Basintale has said possessing dollars in Ghana is not a crime.
According to him, if it is a crime to possess dollars in Ghana then the Forex Bureau responsible for selling and buying dollars becomes meaningless .
Commenting on a viral video involving Sammy Gyamfi and Agradaa dollars gift saga on TV3, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Youth Employment Agency stated that Sammy Gyamfi has committed no crime by gifting Agradaa dollars.
He said if possessing a dollar is a crime in Ghana then the Forex Bureau should turn to chop bars.
“The reason why it is not a crime to possess a dollar in this country is because we even have Forex. And the Forex Bureaus that are registered under the laws of this country permit you to buy and sell dollars, so if it is a crime then the Forex Bureau should be turned into chop bars. Because they mean simply they are not fit to establish the fact that you go in and possess a dollar.” Malik stated.
He also clarified that even though the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah invited Sammy Gyamfi but it was not on the grounds of possessing a dollar.
“There was no official document anywhere suggesting that the Chief of Staff invited him based on A, B, C, D and so we can not establish that. If I come to your studio today and hug and people go out there to say because Malik Basintale hugged Akable, it means he is a gay so he needs to be investigated and there is an uproar, the Presidency will invite me.” Basintale indicated.
“But they will invite me not because I am a gay, they will invite me because there was a public sentiment and people think I must come and respond to it. And so the fact that you have been invited does not simply mean you are guilty. The Supreme Court can even invite you and if you go to the Supreme Court, it doesn’t simply mean you are guilty.” He added.
