Former Techiman South MCE calls for balanced support for both girl- and boy-child development

Former Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Techiman South, Prince Yaw Donyina, has called on policymakers, educators, and development partners to adopt a more balanced approach in promoting the welfare of children by ensuring equal support for both the girl-child and the boy-child.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Elvisanokyenews.net, Mr. Donyina praised ongoing efforts to empower girls across Ghana but cautioned that a singular focus on girl-child empowerment could unintentionally leave boys behind, potentially creating a new form of gender imbalance.

“Women empowerment initiatives are commendable, and we are seeing great progress in our communities. However, we must not forget about the boy-child. If we only focus on empowering girls, we may unintentionally create a new imbalance where boys are left behind.” He stated

The former Techiman South Municipal Chief Executive made this statement in response to a discussion that emerged during the presentation of key findings from a research project on self-built housing in Ghana. The research revealed that the boy-child is now falling significantly behind in academics and other areas, while the girl-child is achieving remarkable success across various sectors and disciplines.

He expressed concern over the growing number of young men who appear to be struggling with educational, social, and economic challenges while many young women are making commendable strides in various sectors. He attributed part of this disparity to the disproportionate attention given to programs targeted at the girl-child.

“While many women are excelling in various fields, it is troubling to see many young men struggling. This could be a result of neglect in our efforts to support the girl-child. If not addressed, it could impact the overall development of our country.” He said

Mr. Prince Yaw Donyina further disclosed that national development can only be achieved when both genders are equally supported to realize their full potential. As such, he urged stakeholders to shift from a gender-exclusive approach to a more gender-equitable strategy that uplifts all children regardless of sex.

“I urge policymakers to develop strategies that promote equity in the development of both boys and girls. By doing so, we can ensure that everyone contributes to the progress and prosperity of our beloved country.” He stated
