Godfred Dame defends role in Chief Justice case, denies political bias

Former Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame has firmly defended his decision to represent Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo in her injunction application to the Supreme Court, seeking to halt the committee proceedings on her possible removal.

According to him, his decision to represent the Chief Justice is not a sign of political alignment with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), but rather a reflection of his unwavering commitment to the independence of the judiciary.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Newsnite, Mr. Dame described as “totally erroneous” any suggestion that his legal support for the Chief Justice was politically motivated. He emphasized that his actions are in line with a long-standing dedication to upholding the rule of law and shielding the judiciary from undue political attacks.

“It is totally erroneous and must be corrected, it is about time that the proper things are stood for in this country, and we cannot let people mislead the public and then let it go uncorrected.” He stated

The former Attorney General rejected suggestions that his legal representation of the suspended Chief Justice creates any conflict of interest, describing such claims as baseless and completely unfounded.

He further stated that his actions are not about Justice Torkornoo as an individual, but rather about safeguarding the judiciary from what he sees as orchestrated efforts to undermine its authority

“I’m making the point that indeed the action I have taken is consistent with all actions I taken right from the first day I was giving appointments at Attorney General. I remember my inaugural speech at the Ghana Bar Association in 2021 in Bolgatanga, avery significant part of it was devoted to protecting the independence of the judiciary and to ensure that attacks on independence of the judiciary as we are witnessing now do not occur.

“So indeed what I doing now is very much in tune and consistent with all I have stood for. It’s not about Justice Gertrude Torkornoo at all but it is ensuring that this unwarranted attack on the judiciary is fought off. I pursue all that has been happening as a very calculated effort on the part of the NDC government to attack the judiciary  and shape it in the manner that they desire.” He said.
