Abrafi Women and Children Hospital to host special pregnancy school on June 2

The Abrafi Women and Children Hospital in Techiman is set to host a special Pregnancy School Training for all pregnant women within the Bono East regional capital and surrounding communities on June 2, 2025.

The initiative is designed to equip expectant mothers with vital knowledge on pregnancy care, including nutrition, healthy lifestyle choices, and prenatal care. The program forms part of the hospital’s broader efforts to improve maternal health and reduce pregnancy-related complications in the region.

In an interview with the media, the Matron of the hospital, Madam Millicent Kusi Appiah, disclosed that most women are oblivious to what to do when expecting a child, hence the need for such training.

She urged all expectant mothers to take advantage of this opportunity to receive professional guidance from trained health personnel with deep knowledge in maternal care.

“Most of the pregnant women do not know what they are supposed to do or avoid during pregnancy. Many are unaware of the types of food and lifestyles that are good for their health and that of their unborn child.

“The purpose of the pregnancy school is to properly educate women on how to take care of themselves during pregnancy and after childbirth. It will help them recognize danger signs during pregnancy and understand the importance of taking their prescribed medication.” She said

She further disclosed that the  program will also provide a supportive space for women to share their pregnancy and childbirth experiences, ask questions, and gain clarity on important health matters.

Madam Millicent Kusi Appiah, encouraged all women whether currently pregnant or planning to conceive to take advantage of the Pregnancy School and antenatal services offered at the hospital.

“The school will also provide a platform for women to share their experiences with pregnancy and childbirth. They will have the opportunity to ask questions, which we believe will be very beneficial.

“We invite all women whether pregnant or not to attend the pregnancy school, as it can play a significant role in preventing maternal mortality.” She said.

Madam Appiah also stressed the importance of attending antenatal care appointments regularly, stressing that it remains the cornerstone of maternal health.

“We check the vital signs of all expectant mothers, including their blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, body temperature, and more. This is done at every antenatal visit to monitor the health of both the mother and the baby. That’s why it is extremely important for all pregnant women to attend antenatal care regularly.

“In addition to monitoring vital signs, there are essential medications that pregnant women need to take, which are provided during antenatal visits. Therefore, I encourage all women to visit the hospital for antenatal care as soon as they suspect they are pregnant.” She said.

Madam Millicent Kusi Appiah continued, “We also conduct regular checkups to monitor the health of the fetus and ensure a safe and healthy delivery. During antenatal sessions, we educate mothers on which foods to avoid, which are beneficial, the proper medications to take, and other important practices that contribute to a healthy pregnancy and delivery.”
