FDA warns public against use of parazone on Skin, labels it “extremely dangerous”

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has issued a strong warning to the public against the dangerous misuse of hypochlorite bleach, commonly known by the brand name Parazone, on human skin.

This caution comes in response to growing concerns about the chemical being used for skin-lightening and other unapproved personal care purposes, particularly among children. The FDA is urging the public, especially parents and caregivers, to avoid exposing children to such harsh chemicals under any circumstance. Authorities are also encouraging the reporting of retailers or individuals who promote or sell hypochlorite products for unapproved skin-related uses.

Emmanuel Nkrumah, Head of the FDA’s Cosmetics and Household Chemicals Department, stressed that hypochlorite is strictly intended for disinfecting hard surfaces and should never come into contact with the skin.

“Hypochlorite bleach is not meant to touch the skin, it’s for floors, surfaces, to disinfect surfaces and it’s a very harmful chemical. It’s one of the high-risk categories in this class.” He stated

According to Mr. Nkrumah, the misuse of such chemicals poses severe health risks including chemical burns, long-term skin damage, and possible systemic toxicity. He disclosed that even when used correctly for cleaning purposes, protective gear such as gloves and proper clothing are essential.

“When you use such a product on your skin, it’s very dangerous. Even when you are using it to clean the floor, there are very serious precautions as to the protective clothing, hand gloves, etc., that you have to use.” He said.

He further revealed that the label on such products contains critical safety instructions, which must be followed diligently.

“The mode of use and application is also clearly  indicated on the label. It’s very important and it has to be followed, so it’s not a skincare product or preparation.
