Techiman North DCE marks World Environment Day with NCCE at Tuobodom

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Techiman North, Hon. Adom K. Johnson, on Wednesday joined the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) to commemorate World Environment Day at Tuobodom Senior Technical School.

World Environment Day, celebrated annually on June 5, promotes awareness and action for the protection of the environment. Supported by governments, businesses, and non-governmental organizations, it serves as the United Nations’ primary global platform for environmental outreach.

As part of this year’s celebration, President John Dramani Mahama launched the “One Tree Per Child” initiative on June 5, 2025, at Kwabenya Senior High School in Accra. The nationwide tree-planting campaign seeks to engage every school-aged child in planting and caring for at least one tree.

The programme aims to plant tens of millions of trees by 2030 to help cool cities, restore ecosystems, and foster a sense of environmental responsibility among the youth. The President also launched the broader “Tree for Life Reforestation Initiative,” which targets the planting of 30 million trees between June 5 and June 30.

Techiman North marked the day with a community gathering at Tuobodom Senior Technical School. Hon. Adom Kwabena Johnson joined scores of participants to reflect on the urgent need to tackle plastic waste and promote environmental sustainability. The event was held under the global theme: “Beat Plastic Pollution.”

Delivering the keynote address, Hon. Johnson shared sobering statistics on the impact of plastic pollution, noting that an estimated 11 million tonnes of plastic waste enter aquatic ecosystems globally each year. He further highlighted that the annual social and environmental cost of plastic pollution is estimated to range between US$300 billion and US$600 billion.

“Plastic pollution is one of the most pressing yet solvable environmental challenges of our time,” he emphasized. “We have practical solutions within reach, and it begins with a collective commitment to change our habits and embrace cleaner practices.” He stated.

Hon. Adom Kwabena Johnson urged all participants to embrace environmental cleanliness and responsibility. He commended H.E. John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic, for reintroducing the National Sanitation Day, which will be observed on the first Saturday of every month, as a nationwide effort to promote a cleaner Ghana.

The DCE encouraged the youth to become champions of environmental stewardship in their communities and pledged the Assembly’s support for initiatives that protect natural resources and promote sustainable development.

“Let us embrace the call to keep our environment clean not just for ourselves, but for generations to come. I commend President Mahama for reintroducing National Sanitation Day, a bold step toward a cleaner Ghana. I urge our youth to rise as champions of environmental stewardship, and I assure you that the Assembly stands ready to support every initiative that protects our natural resources and drives sustainable development.” He said.
