Alban Bagbin announces impending legislation for lifestyle audits in bold move against corruption

The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has announced that Parliament is preparing to draft legislation that will institutionalize lifestyle audits for individuals suspected of amassing unexplained wealth.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Monday, June 9, Speaker Bagbin disclosed that this legislative effort is a crucial step toward tackling the deep-rooted issue of corruption in Ghana’s public and private sectors.
He added that the move has gained traction among senior members of government and civil society, including the Vice President, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, who also recently expressed support for such reforms.
“I am to this end receiving a lot of inputs to process legislation in lifestyle audits,so no wonder that is becoming pronounced in speeches of senior members in civil society,in government, and just yesterday or two days ago our own Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemangmade mention of it.” He said.
According to the Speaker, the proposed bill will empower institutions such as the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) and other anti-corruption agencies to investigate the lifestyles of public officials, politically exposed persons, and private individuals whose standards of living appear inconsistent with their lawful income.
“We will legislate in this matter and I was happy to hear OSP also includedin their statement. We will legislate and we will stop this impunity of peopleflouting ill-gotten wealth in the face of poor Ghanaians.” He said.
