Gabby Otchere Darko reveals why Asaase Radio was shut down

New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart, Gabby Otchere-Asare Darko and Chairman of Asaase Broadcasting Company has revealed why Asaase Radio was shut down by National Communications Authority (NCA).

Asaase Radio 99.5 together with Wontumi Radio and some sixty-two (62) Radio Stations were shut down due to regulatory sanctions.

According to Gabby Otchere Darko, Asaase Radio delayed in renewing its licence in 2024.

He explained that the Company was supposed to renew the licence by October 2024 but it was delayed till December 2024.

“Yes, it’s true. Asaase Radio 99.5, which celebrates its 5th anniversary Saturday, has been shut down. The General Manager informs me it’s because the station was delayed in renewing its licence last year. It was to be renewed by October but only done in December 2024.” Gabby posted on X.

Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation and Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram, Sam George to liaise with the National Communications Authority (NCA) to immediately restore the broadcast of sixty-four (64) radio stations shut down over regulatory sanctions.

“President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation to liaise with the National Communications Authority (NCA) to immediately restore the broadcast of sixty-four (64) radio stations affected by the regulator’s action,” The President said in a statement issued by Government’s Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu.

“The President believes that regulatory compliance must take into account the need to uphold and enhance media freedom, and that requiring radio stations to shut down while awaiting the regularization of their authorization could limit the space for expressing such freedoms,” Part of the statement added.

“The president has asked the Minister to work with the NCA on a reasonable timeframe within which the affected stations should regularise their authorization,”
