The Bono East Regional Minister, Hon. Francis Owusu-Antwi, has expressed heartfelt gratitude to members of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) for suspending their nationwide strike and returning to work.
The strike, which was initiated over concerns related to the implementation of the nurses’ and midwives’ Collective Agreement and conditions of service, caused significant concern across the country.
However, following a timely and fruitful intervention by the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health and other key stakeholders, the impasse was amicably resolved during a meeting held on Thursday, June 12, 2025.
Speaking to the media, Hon. Owusu-Antwi acknowledged the critical role nurses play in the healthcare delivery system and highlighted the potential dangers prolonged strike actions pose to public health.
“Nurses recently embarked on a strike due to concerns about their conditions of service. Fortunately, the Minister of Health has engaged in fruitful negotiations with them, and they have agreed to resume work.”
“We are all aware of the impact a strike can have, especially in the health sector. It causes significant inconveniences and, in some cases, may even lead to the loss of lives. Now that the strike has been called off, I would like to, on behalf of the government and other stakeholders, express our sincere appreciation to the nurses for prioritizing the health and well-being of Ghanaians.” He said.
Hon. Francis Owusu-Antwi also assured the nursing community that their concerns are being taken seriously.
“We are confident that the government, through the Ministry of Health, will continue to work diligently to address their concerns.” He stated.
