President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E John Dramani Mahama, has announced that the long-awaited Damango Water Supply System is set to commence soon.
According to the President, the project, when completed and commissioned, will provide clean drinking water to thousands of residents in the Savannah Region.
President Mahama affirmed that all technical designs for the project have been completed and that the initiative has secured funding from the European Union, paving the way for immediate implementation.
“Your Royal Majesty, access to clean water is not a luxury. It is a basic right. The Damango water supply system, which has been delayed for far too long, will come on stream.
“We have all the designs ready and have been offered funding by the European Union to execute the project.” He said.
The Damango Water Supply Project forms part of the broader national agenda to enhance water and sanitation infrastructure, especially in underserved regions of the country. Once operational, the system is expected to reduce the prevalence of waterborne diseases, relieve residents, especially women and children from long daily treks in search of water, and improve school attendance and productivity.
President John Dramani Mahama disclosed that the project will tap from the White Volta at Yapei and channel water westward to Damango, ensuring the supply of clean and safe drinking water to over 8,000 residents. He further revealed that all communities located along the water pipeline will benefit from the distribution network, expanding the reach of the initiative beyond Damango itself.
“This project will draw water from the white water at Yapie and supply it to the west, to Damango and I’m happy to announce that it will serve the 8,000 residents of Damango and all communities along the water pipeline will also receive clean drinking water.
