Nitiwul condemns NIB’s attempted warrantless arrest of Assin South MP

Former Defence Minister Dominic Aduna Bingab Nitiwul has publicly expressed deep disappointment over what he describes as a troubling and unlawful conduct by operatives of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) during an attempted arrest of Assin South Member of Parliament, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour.

He also expressed disbelief over the conduct of the Director-General of the National Intelligence Bureau, Charles Alhassan Kipo, stating that he knows him personally and and would never have expected him to authorize or be associated with such an incident.

The Member of Parliament for the Bimbilla, speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on Wednesday, which was monitored by Elvisanokyenews.net, disclosed that he was alerted by a colleague that the Rev. Ntim Fordjour’s home had been surrounded by operatives “suspected to be from the NIB.”

“I got a call from one of my colleagues that the Ranking Member on Defense and Interior house has been surrounded by people suspected to be from N.I.B. ostensibly to arrest him.

“There were a lot of police people, I counted about 15 of them. When I got there. I didn’t believe that that is the case, but I just thought I should go there and find out, also being the media part defense minister, I thought that I could be part of people who could calm situations down if there’s a need be.

“Truly when I went there, I knew a lot of the police people who were there. I had worked with some of them in that place, and so I thought that we could go there and talk.” He said.

Dominic Nitiwul continued, “Also, N.I.B. Director General I know him personally, it was my senior in Senior High School. We worked with him. In fact, we gave him a very sensitive job when we were in government, and so there are some things that I would not have expected that they would do.”

The former Defence Minister further disclosed that the officers from the NIB went into the house of the Assin South MP without a warrant, a move he said stunned him most. Nitiwul condemned the statement as legally and ethically flawed, emphasizing that no individual, regardless of their rank or position, can override constitutional rights.

“When I got there the NIB had actually sent people to the place, so the first question when I went is I asked them is that if they had a warrant, they said no.

“In fact, the gentleman who led the operation actually said that he’s a senior person and that alone is enough for him. He’s a warrant in himself.  We had a lot of lawyers, they were clearly disagreeing and told him that you cannot say just because you are a senior person within the NIB, your face alone is a warrant to arrest a member of parliament or any other citizen for that matter because they all have rights.” He stated.
