The Chairperson of the recently concluded National Economic Dialogue, Dr. Ishmael Yamson, has called on Ghana’s private sector to take an active role in addressing the country’s economic challenges.
The National Economic Dialogue, a two-day forum held in Accra under the theme “Resetting Ghana: Building the Economy We Want Together,” aimed to build consensus among stakeholders, policymakers, business leaders, academics, and civil society on strategies for economic transformation. It sought to develop solutions that would reduce the nation’s dependence on external bailouts and put the country on a path toward fiscal and macroeconomic stability.
Speaking in an interview on Joy News’ PM Express Business which was keenly monitored by Elvisanokyenews.net, Dr. Yamson disclosed that the private sector holds the key to reviving Ghana’s struggling economy and must leverage its expertise to complement government efforts in overcoming the crisis, urging them to become part of the solution rather than remain on the sidelines
“Now I’ll say to the private sector, this is not the time to stand on the fence. Be part of the solution to the problem because we know, and we believe, as the private sector, that we can make a big, big difference. We must bring our expertise to help even the public sector,” he urged.
Dr. Yamson further highlighted the efficiency of private sector operations compared to the public sector, stating that the private sector have a level of discipline and accountability that could be beneficial in shaping public sector reforms.
“Because, you see, I’m not saying discipline, but the discipline in the private sector is far more outstanding than the discipline in the public sector. There’s a lot we can share with the public sector,” he noted.
In a reassuring message to international investors, the former Unilever Ghana CEO encouraged them to remain confident in Ghana’s economic recovery, assuring that the country has reached its lowest point and can only improve from here.
“To investors sitting outside Ghana, I will say, don’t give up, because this country cannot go any further down than it is today,” he stated optimistically.
