GRNMA strike is due to gov’t failure to prioritize their concerns in the 2025 budget – Richard Ahiagbah laments

The Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has waded into the impasse between the government and the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) strike.

The GRNMA is still on strike to express their displeasure over government failure to implement their 2024 collective agreement.

The Association embarked on strike on June 4 2025.

Reacting to this, Richard Ahiagbah blamed the government for neglecting the concerns of GRNMA in the 2025 budget.

According to him, the government must take responsibility for the nationwide strike action for failing to prioritize the concerns of GRNMA. He said the GRNMA plays a crucial role in the country and healthcare delivery system and for that matter their concerns should be addressed appropriately.

“The ongoing standoff between the government and the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association demonstrates an apparent disregard for nurses’ invaluable contributions to our healthcare delivery system.” He posted.

“While I do not support striking healthcare workers, the government must take responsibility for the impasse because it failed to prioritize the concerns of GRNMA in the 2025 budget. It is unfair that the Jubilee House budgets some GHS 2.71 billion in compensation for itself but ignores the small adjustment due to the nurses.” Part of the post read.

Ahiagbah also lamented the consequences the strike action has brought on the patients and called on the government to act quickly.

“Patients are caught in the middle of this issue. The government must act quickly to avert further pain to Ghanaians. Government must act to save lives…” He said.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Health and Member of Parliament for Sefwi Juaboso has appealed to retired nurses and midwives across the country to volunteer their services as the government is still negotiating with the strike nurses.

He said the services of retired nurses and midwives have become necessary due to suffering some patients in the affected areas are going through.
