Government takes swift action to address nursing strike impact

In response to the ongoing strike by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), the Ministry of Health has announced immediate steps to mitigate its effects and safeguard public access to healthcare services.

The strike, which has disrupted nursing operations at several health facilities, has prompted the Ministry to activate a contingency plan to ensure the continued delivery of essential healthcare services nationwide. In a press release dated June 10, 2025, the Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to securing the approval and implementation of new Conditions of Service for nurses and midwives through appropriate negotiation channels.

As part of our commitment to building a healthy population for national development, we are making alternative provisions to fill the gaps created by the industrial action. A portion of the release reads.

Through the release, the Ministry further urged the public to continue seeking healthcare at facilities where services remain available. A list of operational CHAG, quasi-government, and private facilities has been published to guide citizens in accessing care.”

Mr. Isaac Ofei Baah, Head of the Ministry’s Public Relations Unit, reiterated that every effort is being made to resolve the standoff in a manner that balances public interest with fair labor practices.

Meanwhile, government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu clarified that the move was not a reversal of policy, but rather a necessary economic safeguard.

UPDATE ON ADDITIONAL MEASURES TO MITIGATE THE EFFECTS OF GRNMA’S STRIKE ACTION.

As a result of the ongoing strike action by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), it has become imperative for the Ministry of Health to implement additional measures to mitigate any inconvenience that has been caused.

The Ministry wishes to emphatically state that it has through all appropriate channels, led negotiations to ensure the smooth approval and implementation of the new Conditions of Service.

In line with the Ministry’s policy to ensure a healthy population for national development, it has become necessary to make provisions to fill the gaps created as a result of the strike.

Consequently, the Ministry urges the general public to continue seeking healthcare services at various health facilities, including those where nursing services remain available, to ensure their health needs are met.
