Mpox warning: WHO pushes for personal responsibility and hygiene

A senior World Health Organization (WHO) official has called for urgent international cooperation and renewed public vigilance to prevent the spread of the Mpox virus. The call comes amid an ongoing global outbreak..

Speaking to the media, Dr. Sally-Ann Ohene, WHO Country Preparedness and International Health Regulations (IHR) Officer, revealed that vaccines for MPox remain in very short supply globally, and most countries are struggling to access adequate doses.

She urged governments to initiate direct negotiations with countries that currently hold vaccine stocks, while ongoing global advocacy pushes for increased production to meet the growing demand.

“Unfortunately, vaccines for MPox are in very short supply. They are not readily available. Some countries have them, so what is being promoted is bilateral engagements to help others access vaccines.” She stated.

She further explained that Mpox is transmitted through close contact, particularly skin-to-skin interactions with individuals exhibiting visible rashes. She therefore advised anyone with suspicious symptoms to seek immediate medical attention, as the disease often mimics other illnesses and requires proper diagnosis.

Dr. Sally-Ann stressed the importance of personal responsibility and preventive measures to reduce transmission. Drawing lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic, she encouraged the public to return to good hygiene practices.

“We must go back to regular handwashing with soap under running water. It was a habit during COVID that we unfortunately dropped, but it remains essential now.” She revealed.

Dr. Sally-Ann Ohene continued, ““If someone at home is isolating, frequently touched surfaces must be cleaned regularly. If interaction is necessary, wear a face mask and avoid physical contact.”
