Former Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, Apostle Professor Kwadwo Nimfour Opoku Onyinah has clarified misinformation surrounding the National Cathedral project initiated by the previous government.
According to him, when the then President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo appointed the trustees, he told them four things which included a seed money of $25 million dollars and later GHC25 million.
The Ghanaian and African Pentecostal leader and theological scholar said the money was deposited in the trustees fund which the government didn’t have control over the money again.
“A bit of light on the cathedral because I have seen that there has been misinformation going around. First of all, I would like to tell you that when the president and the trustees he told us four things for us, that is he will give us land, he will appoint the architect, he will establish a secretariat for us and lastly, he said he would give us seed money. And he has almost done everything except the seed money that has not concluded.” Apostle Opoku Onyinah stated.
“Initially, he gave us a seed money of $25 million dollars and later GHC25 million. And I think this is where the Parliamentarians have a problem with him and that one we leave it with them because it is not at our level. But when the seed money was given, it was given to us to our fund so once the money was given it was not the government controlling the money again.” He added.
He indicated that the National Cathedral was registered in 2019 as a company limited by a guarantee.
“In July 2019, the Cathedral was registered as a company limited by a guarantee so we do our things but thank God that we have a procurement and technical committee with the PPA Deputy Director as a member of the Procurement and technical committee.” He stressed.
The NPP government received severe criticism after the government failed to complete the Cathedral as promised.
Ghanaians accused the previous government of spending over $50 million on the Cathedral but delivered only a pit.
