Shatta Movement proposes for Ghana Music Certification Authority for certification purposes

Shatta Movement has proposed establishment of Ghana Music Certification Authority (GMCA) as the official body for collecting and verifying music industry statistics for certification purposes.

Shatta Movement understands having an independent body to access songs will contribute to the growth of Ghana’s music industry and enhance its ability to attract more investment and interest from international markets.

In a post on Facebook, the Movement stated that data collection is key in this age of digital innovation in the music business.

“The music industry must, as a matter of urgency, establish a system or create an avenue where songs and albums can be classified and certified based on their unit sales, streams, and other relevant metrics.” The post read.

Below is the proposal:

Ghana Music Should Have Its Own Official Certification!

The music industry must, as a matter of urgency, establish a system or create an avenue where songs and albums can be classified and certified based on their unit sales, streams, and other relevant metrics.

We should define clear benchmarks — for example, a certain number of streams or sales — and peg them to certifications such as Silver, Gold, and Diamond.

A Ghana Music Certification Authority (GMCA) can be established to undertake such data research and become the official body for collecting and verifying music industry statistics for certification purposes. These are modern and globally recognized methods of rating the popularity, reach, and impact of songs and albums at any given time.

Such a system will contribute significantly to the growth of Ghana’s music industry and enhance its ability to attract more investment and interest from international markets.

Data collection is key in this age of digital innovation in the music business and this can bring more competition amongst the actors in the field and increase great opportunities for everyone in the ecosystem to benefit.
