“The pandemic is not over” – GHS responds to COVID-19 outbreak at UG

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has said the COVID-19 pandemic is not over even though the World Health Organisation (WHO) no longer classifies COVID-19 as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.

GHS responding to COVID-19 outbreak at the University of Ghana urged the public to be vigilant and adhere to prevention protocols to avoid over spreading.

“Although the current outbreak is localized, the public is urged to remain vigilant. Frequent hand-washing and mask-wearing in crowded or poorly ventilated spaces remain essential. The Ministry of Health, through the Ghana Health Service, assures the University community and the public that all necessary steps are being taken to prevent further spread and to control the outbreak effectively.” GHS said in a statement signed by the Acting Director General, Prof. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea.

“The World Health Organisation (WHO) no longer classifies COVID-19 as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. However, the pandemic is not over. Sporadic outbreaks which may follow seasonal patterns are expected to occur globally.” The statement added.

In Ghana, COVID-19 cases have been steadily declining for over a year. Nonetheless, surveillance continues nationwide through the Ghana Health Service (GHS) and the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR), as part of the national influenza and COVID-19 monitoring program across all 16 regions.

“In recent weeks, an uptick in COVID-19 cases has been observed, currently limited to the University of Ghana community. GHS is actively collaborating with the University authorities to contain the outbreak and review the measures in response to the evolving situation. The current situation is all mild with no admissions. However, if anyone experiences any of the following symptoms including fever or chills, cough, sore throat, general bodily weakness, shortness or difficulty in breathing, loss of taste or smell immediately report to the nearest hospital.”

Prevention protocols:

The public is reminded to adhere to the following preventive measures to curb the spread of COBID-19:

  1. Maintain social distancing
  2. Wear face masks, especially in enclosed or poorly ventilated area
  3. Wash hands with soap under running water or used hand sanitizer
  4. Stay at home and self-isolate if unwell
  5. Avoid large gathering
  6. Seek medical attention if symptoms develop
