Foreign Affairs Ministry issues final warning on diplomatic, service passport recall

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a stern reminder regarding the recall of Diplomatic and Service Passports issued during the previous administration.

The Ministry has set a firm deadline of March 17, 2025, for all affected individuals to surrender their passports to the Legal and Treaties Bureau without fail.

The directive follows an earlier announcement by the Ministry in regards to a directive from the Office of the President on January 15, 2025, which outlined the recall process and the categories of individuals required to comply.

According to a release by the Ministry, 404 Diplomatic Passports and 387 Service Passports remain unreturned despite previous notices, prompting this final warning.

The recall applies to individuals who no longer serve in an official capacity for the State, including:

  • Former Ministers and their spouses
  • Former Members of Parliament, regardless of political affiliation
  • Former Members of the Council of State and their spouses
  • Former Justices of the Superior and Lower Courts
  • Former Regional Ministers, Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives
  • Officers of State Institutions, Chairs, and Board Members
  • Officials of the National Cathedral Project
  • Former Political Ambassadors and their dependents
  • Businessmen and Entrepreneurs
  • Former Government Functionaries
  • Any other individuals holding official passports without an active state role

Consequences of Non-Compliance

The Ministry has emphasized that any passports not surrendered by the March 17 deadline will be cancelled and placed on a Stop-Watch List for seizure at Ghana’s entry and exit points.

This move aims to ensure the integrity of Ghana’s diplomatic travel documents and prevent unauthorized use by individuals who no longer qualify for such privileges.

The Ministry has urged all affected persons to adhere to the directive promptly to avoid complications.
