Member of Parliament for Ketu North and a member of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Education, Eric Edem Agbana has reacted to University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) dress code.
According to him, maintaining discipline and upholding codes of conduct in our educational institutions nose rings, anklets, and similar forms but the University’s directive to ban items such as nose rings, anklets, and similar forms of personal expression at the tertiary level is too draconian.
“I understand the importance of instilling discipline and upholding codes of conduct in our educational institutions. However, banning nose rings, anklets, and similar forms of personal expression at the tertiary level is an overreach. UPSA must reconsider the scope of this directive.” Eric Agbana posted on X.
“We can certainly maintain a minimal and generally accepted standard of dressing, but prohibiting items like nose rings is excessive.” He said.
The NDC MP stressed that the directive of the University may force other institutions to refuse students with tattoos, or anything similar, which he believes is not accepted.
“If we do not nip such directives in the bud, an institution may wake up tomorrow and declare that students with tattoos, or anything similar, are not welcome.” The MP stressed.
“As a former student leader, I would not have accepted such a measure. As a Member of Parliament and a member of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Education, I do not accept it now. MY PERSONAL VIEW!!!!” He added.
UPSA in a Memo indicated that students will not be allowed into lecture halls with unkempt hair, shorts, bathroom, slippers, track suits, anklets, nose rings, and others.
“With effect from July 1, 2025, a task force will be positioned at strategic locations on campus to enforce the dress code and bring sanity to campus. Note, that you will not be allowed into lecture halls with unkempt hair, shorts, bathroom, slippers, track suits, anklets, nose rings, etc, to mention a few.” The University said.
