Education is the foundation for national transformation – Haruna Iddrisu

The Minister of Education and Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu, has explained the critical role of education in the successful implementation of the newly launched 24-hour economy policy.

Responding to a question on how his ministry will contribute to the execution of the policy, the Minister stated that education remains the bedrock of national transformation, and without an educated population, the vision of a 24-hour economy cannot be fully realized.

“Even if you want to succeed in fighting galamsey, you would need a trained miner,  that has to be an educated miner. If you want to sell goods and know the prices of goods, you will need an educated person to be able to do that. If you want to control population, birth control and others, you want an educated woman to understand the value of doing that. So education, as I said, is the bedrock of development.” He stated

His remarks came shortly after President John Dramani Mahama officially launched the 24-hour economy policy on Wednesday, July 2, 2025. The policy, which forms part of the NDC government’s broader economic strategy, is expected to create sustainable jobs, boost productivity, and improve the livelihoods of Ghanaians across all sectors.

According to President Mahama, the 24-hour economy is backed by comprehensive research and stakeholder consultation, undertaken by the newly established 24-hour Economy Secretariats. Experts, investors, traders, farmers, and other key players were all involved in shaping the policy to ensure it meets the real needs of the Ghanaian people.

The president explained that the policy would not only reduce unemployment but also position Ghana as a competitive, production-driven economy. The Accelerated Export Development Initiative, launched alongside the 24-hour policy, is also designed to reduce import dependency and increase local production capacity.

The Minister of Education pledged his ministry’s full support in aligning educational reforms and skills training with the demands of a 24-hour economy, particularly in technical and vocational education, STEM, and entrepreneurial development.

“Our task at the Ministry of Education is to prepare the human capital for this bold transformation. We must equip learners with the knowledge, skills, and values that will make them key players in this economy.” He said.
