The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly rejected the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to conduct a rerun of the parliamentary election in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North Constituency, describing the move as unjustified and lacking consensus.
The Deputy General Secretary of the NPP, Haruna Mohammed, in an interview with the media expressed the party’s deep dissatisfaction with the EC’s announcement, which was made following a high-level meeting between the Commission and representatives of the NPP and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Tuesday, July 1, 2025.
According to the EC, the rerun is scheduled for Friday, July 11, 2025, and aims to resolve the long-standing dispute between the NPP and NDC over the validity of results from the affected polling stations.
However, Haruna Mohammed criticized the rationale behind the Commission’s decision, stressing that it contradicts earlier assurances given by the EC.
“You also remember that on the 29th or so ,it was a Friday, they went to Parliament. They were asked questions specifically on whether there is a court order restraining the Electoral Commission from proceeding to collate and declare.
“They indicated that it was because of security issues, and they said they are ready if security is provided for them to collate the three polling stations. So there is consistency in terms of the reportage. So for us to wake up, then come to a meeting, and you tell us this? That’s why all the parties stood their ground.” He stated.
He further revealed that the EC had previously proceeded with declarations in polling stations under more questionable circumstances. Haruna Mohammed accused the Electoral Commission of betraying the trust of Ghanaians, as he referenced the EC’s earlier position on the matter before Parliament.
“I will tell you in Dome-Kwabenya, there were no pink sheets, but in that particular polling station, they went ahead. They even declared a rerun at that particular polling station. So what has changed?
“They told Parliament that they are ready to declare. They are ready to collate and declare from where? You think we are fools in this country? We’re not going to accept it.” He said.
