America doesn’t belong to one person; Our democratic principles are under attack – Obama

Former United States of America President, Barack Obama has raised concerns about the current state of the country.

Obama said the US current democratic principles under President Donald Trump are under attack.

According to him, no individual owns America, the US belongs to all the citizens and for that democracy must work for the benefit of the citizens.

“Independence Day is a reminder that America is not the project of any one person. The single most powerful word in our democracy is the word ‘We.’ ‘We The People.’ ‘We Shall Overcome.’ ‘Yes We Can.’ America is owned by no one. It belongs to all citizens.” Obama said in a post on social media -X on July 4, 2025 as America celebrates Independence day.

Every year the US commemorates Independence day which was declared by the Second Continental Congress on July 4, 1776 to separate from Britain.

Obama bemoaned how disengaged many people around the world have become.

He said it is the time America builds its democracies and makes them work in meaningful and practical ways for ordinary people.

“And at this moment in history—when core democratic principles seem to be continuously under attack, when too many people around the world have become cynical and disengaged—now is precisely the time to ask ourselves tough questions about how we can build our democracies and make them work in meaningful and practical ways for ordinary people.” He added.

His comment at the time US President, Donald Trump is in a trade war with many countries.

Trump has currently imposed tariffs on many countries while other countries face visa restrictions.
