Sariki Fanyinama III honors legacy of Ibrahim Fanyinamah I as founder of modern Kintampo

The President of the National Council of Wangara Chiefs and Acting President of the Zongo Chiefs Council, Sariki Fanyinama III, has paid glowing tribute to the late Ibrahim Fanyinamah I, describing him as the visionary leader behind Kintampo’s foundational development.

According to Sariki Masaaba Yussif Coulibaly Fanyinama III, the late ruler’s foresight and leadership were instrumental in shaping Kintampo into a key town in the erstwhile Brong Ahafo region.

He disclosed that Ibrahim Fanyinama I played a pivotal role in promoting peace in the Sub-Saharan region of Africa by constructing several housing units for the then West African Volunteer Forces (WAVF), to support them in effectively discharging their duties in the area.

“Ibrahim Fanyinamah I was a visionary leader who made significant contributions to the development of Kintampo. During his reign, he constructed several housing units for the West African Volunteer Forces (WAVF), who at the time functioned much like today’s ECOWAS peacekeeping forces. Fanyinamah played a major role in accommodating these forces in Kintampo.” He said.

Sariki Fanyinama III, further further disclosed that almost all major developmental projects in Kintampo can be traced back to initiatives started by Ibrahim Fanyinamah I.

He stated that one of his landmark achievements was the establishment of the town’s first formal school, then known as the Kintampo Town School, now the Kintampo Methodist School which was founded in 1937. He revealed that even before the school’s construction, the visionary leader had offered part of his palace as a space for teaching and learning

“Almost every major developmental project seen in Kintampo today was initiated by Ibrahim Fanyinamah I. The first formal school in Kintampo, the Kintampo Town School (now Kintampo Methodist School), was established in 1937 under his leadership. Even before the school’s construction, Fanyinamah offered part of his palace as a space for teaching and learning.

“Notable individuals such as Alhaji Asoma Abu Banda were among the pioneers of the Kintampo Town School. Fanyinamah also designated the site for what became the Kintampo Town Park, now located within the Kintampo Methodist School compound.”

The President of the National Council of Wangara Chiefs also praised the former leader’s dedication to record-keeping and cultural heritage. According to him, in 1951, Ibrahim Fanyinama I introduced the Kintampo Visitor’s Book, which remains in use to this day. He recounted that Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, was the first dignitary to sign the book—using a green pen—a tradition that has been upheld over the decades.

“Another lasting legacy of his leadership is the Kintampo Visitor’s Book, which he initiated in 1951 and which remains in use to this day. The first person to sign the visitor’s book, using a green pen, was Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, setting a tradition that continues.

“Ibrahim Fanyinamah I was truly a visionary leader who laid the foundation for Kintampo’s growth and development.” He stated
