Midwives advised to accept postings to rural areas despite challenges

Mrs. Mary Ofosu made these remarks at the 2nd Quadrennial National Delegates Conference held in Kumasi under the theme “”Midwives- Leading the way with Quality Care”

“I encourage all midwives to accept postings to rural areas. We should not see it as a punishment when we are assigned there. We all started from somewhere before reaching where we are today.”

“The people we are eager to serve in cities and urban areas are the same people living in rural communities. If we all move to the cities, who will take care of our families and loved ones in the villages?” She quizzed

She further appealed to the government and other stakeholders to put measures in place to serve as a source of motivation to midwives that will be posted to rural areas. introduce measures that will motivate midwives to accept postings to rural areas. She explained that her association is in constant negotiations with the government to provide additional incentives for midwives working in underserved communities.

“No nation can develop without a strong healthcare system. We are in continuous discussions with the government to secure incentives for midwives who accept postings to rural areas. This will help prevent them from seeing rural service as a form of punishment.” She said

When asked by the media about the rationale for the conference and some of the challenges midwives face, Mrs. Ofosu highlighted several concerns, including poor working conditions, inadequate staffing, and a lack of essential medical logistics

In attendance was Brother Joshua Ansah, Secretary General of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), who acknowledged the pivotal role played by midwives in healthcare. He emphasized that midwives deserve better treatment and urged the Ministry of Health to make the sector more attractive to prevent the mass migration of health professionals to other countries.

“Everyone in this world was delivered with the help of a midwife, regardless of whether the birth took place at home or in a hospital. This highlights the critical role midwives play in our healthcare system and the nation as a whole.”

“I consider it a privilege to be part of this program. Midwives in the country face numerous challenges, especially when it comes to advancing their education. The government has not made adequate provisions to support their education, which is unfortunate because the knowledge they acquire ultimately benefits the country.” He said

Brother Joshua Ansah appealed to the government to create more opportunities for midwives to upgrade their skills and enhance healthcare delivery.

“We urge the government to provide midwives with opportunities for further education and professional development. This will help improve healthcare standards and ensure better service delivery across the country.”
