Top Ghanaian movie director Jackson K. Bentum has rejected claims that the Kumawood film industry is dead.
Speaking in an interview, he stated that the industry is still alive but going through a period of change. He believes the lack of cinemas across the country is a major setback preventing the industry from fully bouncing back.
“Kumawood is not dead; it’s just evolving. We’ve stopped selling CDs, and that’s why people think it’s dead. But in Bollywood and Hollywood, they moved past that to premiere and digital cinemas,” he explained.
Jackson added that the industry is in a transition phase, similar to what Hollywood and Bollywood experienced before reaching their current heights.
He stressed the importance of building more cinemas across Ghana, saying it would give filmmakers the platform to showcase their work and draw audiences back.
“We have to build more cinemas like it’s done in other countries so people can come and enjoy movies regularly. Without that, we’ll suffer and remain stuck in this transition without ever completing it.”
