“The Ablekuma North Re-Election should be a Wake-Up Call for NPP to Rebuild Internal Security”

The recent Ablekuma North re-election has sent shockwaves through the party and one key takeaway is the need for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to reassess its security strategy. With the police force struggling to maintain order during elections, it’s imperative for the NPP to consider rebuilding its internal security apparatus “VIGILANTE”.

Election-related violence and intimidation have become all too common in Ghana’s political landscape. We experienced this in Assin North by-election, it occurred on a larger scale during the 2024 General election, the Ablekuma North re-election was no exception, with reports of disturbances and security breaches. These incidents highlight the need for NPP to take proactive measures to ensure their members’ safety and security.

While the Ghana Police Service plays a vital role in maintaining law and order, their limitations during elections are evident. To address these concerns, the NPP could focus on rebuilding its internal security structure. The NPP must as matter of urgency consider forming VIGILANTES to protect its members against any sort of attacks and also protect the ballots.

By prioritizing internal security, the NPP can better protect its members and ensure a smoother electoral process. This proactive approach may help prevent future security breaches and maintain party stability.

The ANC in South Africa did it, even though theirs turned out to be a military wing imbedded in their party but we can choose a more civilian way but these security apparatus well put together must be well trained and equipped, there are reports of the NDC thugs yesterday carrying guns “pump actions” in their cars as they tour the polling centers, how could the NPP members who are untrained protect themselves against these NDC thugs? This is the more reason why the party need to set up its own security, if we had one, we could have stopped the attacks on our party members and also protect voters who were willing to come out and vote but was scared of being attacked.

If we aren’t ready to take these measures, then we shouldn’t even think of contesting Akwatia or even the 2028 General election, because they may use violence to take over! If we are serious as a party, then this is the time to act, let’s bring onboard the vigilantes trainee to protect and not destruct.

The Ablekuma North re-election serves as a wake-up call for the NPP to reevaluate its security strategy. By taking steps to rebuild our internal security apparatus, the party can better navigate the challenges of Ghana’s electoral landscape.
