Audio & Video: Techiman records first confirmed case of Monkeypox as Ghana’s total hits 170

The Techiman Municipal Health Directorate has confirmed the municipality’s first positive case of Monkeypox (Mpox), bringing the national tally to 170 confirmed cases, according to the latest update from the Ghana Health Service (GHS).

The Techiman case was initially suspected on June 16, 2025, with a sample collected and sent to Accra for testing. The result, which came back positive on June 25, was officially confirmed by the Municipal Health Directorate.

Speaking to Link News, the Techiman Municipal Disease Control Officer, Mr. Abraham Num, disclosed that at the time the positive case was identified, six other suspected cases were being monitored, but all of them later tested negative.

“Whenever we suspect that a patient is showing symptoms of monkeypox, we immediately take a blood sample and send it to Accra for further testing.

“At the time we recorded one positive case in Techiman, we were monitoring seven suspected cases all of which have since tested negative. We officially recorded the first positive case on the 27th of June.” He stated.

He further outlined some of the symptoms of monkeypox and urged individuals to visit the nearest health center if they notice any of these symptoms in their bodies.

“The symptoms of monkeypox include a skin rash or mucosal lesions that can last 2 to 4 weeks, often accompanied by fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, low energy, and swollen lymph nodes.

“I would advise anyone experiencing these symptoms to visit the hospital for testing and seek professional medical help.” He said.
