Audio: Dennis Miracles Aboagye opens up on the hidden pressures of leadership

Former Communications Lead of the Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia 2024 campaign, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has shed light on the growing financial pressure political leaders face in their efforts to meet the expectations of their constituents.

According to him, leaders in the country, especially political leaders, are often burdened with the responsibility of providing financial assistance to those they serve, a situation he said requires constant resourcefulness and empathy.

In an interview with the media, Dennis Miracle Aboagye shared a personal encounter that reflects the daily realities many public officials contend with.

“Let me tell you this story. One morning, I was in the office in Akuapim North when I was informed that I had a visitor. A gentleman walked in and said, ‘Honourable, I haven’t eaten since morning, and I’ve come all the way from Mampong.”

“I told him,  ‘Today isn’t really a good day. It’s Monday, and we just got back from the weekend.”
But he insisted, “Please, if you don’t give me something, I won’t even be able to get transport back.”

“So I said,  ‘Alright, you know what? Come back on Thursday. But for now, take this GHC100.00 and come on Thursday.” He said.

He explained that although he initially told the visitor it wasn’t a good day and still gave him GHC100 while asking him to return later in the week, the man’s reaction was far from grateful.

“To my surprise, he took the money and said, “Ah, Honourable, I’m not a child to be given GHC100. and this is someone who had just told me he couldn’t even afford the GHC2.00 fare from Akropong to Mampong!

“Now ask yourself, if you have 20, 30, or even 40 people like this coming to you regularly, what do you do?” He quizzed.

He further revealed that there are days when public officials are forced to stay away from their offices simply because they cannot meet the overwhelming financial expectations of the people waiting for them.

He stated that public service in Ghana goes far beyond policymaking and speeches, as leaders are constantly under pressure to provide direct personal support to those they represent.

“There are days when, if you don’t have money, you can’t even go to the office. Have you ever been to an MP’s home in the morning? You should go and see. Visit their homes, their offices, or even Parliament House.

“You’ll see the pressure, they go to funerals, and you’ll see their cars parked there because they must be present for their people and they come with all kinds of needs, school fees, hospital bills, and other issues. That’s why, as a leader, you have to constantly find ways and means to make your people happy.” He said
