Capt Ibrahim Traoré scraps Burkina Faso’s Electoral Commission

Burkina Faso’s military ruler, Capt Ibrahim Traoré has dissolved the country’s National Electoral Commission.

According to the Junta, the National Electoral Commission is a waste of money and it leads to foreign influence.

Reports say the electoral commission composed of 15 commissioners from political parties and civil society was “subsidised” with around $870,000 (£650,000) annually.

Burkina Faso was supposed to hold its national election in July 2024 but Capt Ibrahim Traoré who took power  in September 2022 through a coup postponed it to July 2029.

Territorial Administration Minister Emile Zerbo who announced this indicated that electoral-related issues would now be handled by the territorial administration ministry.
