The 3 directives by Mahama after gov’t discovered Akufo-Addo spent $97m on National Cathedral

 

President John Dramani Mahama has given three directives to protect the interest of the country after the government discovered financial irregularities in the controversial National Cathedral project which amounted to a total of $97 million.

Addressing the media, the Minister of State in charge of Government Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu stated that among other things the president has directed that the Board of Trustees should be dissolved.

“Available evidence indicates that contrary to publications that total payments of the National Cathedral project amount to $58m so far, there is additional outstanding payment of $39 million due the contractor. Now when added up, this brings the total cost to $97 million” He said.

“Also there are additional spending on the National Cathedral despite cessation of work on the project since March, 2023. President John Dramani Mahama has directed that the following steps be taken.

“1. The National Cathedral Secretariat which used to operate from her (presidency) stands dissolved as of May 1, 2025.

“2.The National Cathedral Ghana was registered limited by a guarantee, in view of the Attorney General to take legal steps to ensure the dissolution of the Board of Trustees and we expect that it will be done in the coming days.”

“3. The president has ordered that in the interest of transparency and accountability, the Deloitte and touche audit report will be published as soon as possible.”
